Henry's Place is the tiny no-frills fruit stand and homemade ice-cream window tucked into a Beach Walk storefront a block off Kalakaua, and the cult favorite of locals who know it as the antidote to chain shave-ice. Henry hand-churns small batches from the over-ripe tropical fruit sold out front, so the rotating board reads like a Hawaii farmers' market: lychee, mango, papaya, guava, apple banana, POG, coconut, soursop and frequently lilikoi. There is no extra sugar in many flavors, no formal seating, and the line moves fastest in the morning when the day's flavors are still all in stock. Cash is preferred. It is the spot regulars send first-time visitors to when they want something genuinely local within a five-minute walk of the main beach.
"It is as if you are eating a piece of fruit in ice cream form. No extra sugar taste, not too creamy, and all delicious."
